A Doodle on the corner of a conference pad inspired this sweeping geometric image

At end of Summer This is one of the first pieces I wrote and it did undergo a little modification over the years until reaching its' current stable form.

It was written during a period of constant early-morning commuting by rail through the Chilterns in the late 1970's. The impression of the changing seasons as one ran through the otherwise unchanging and, by then, quite familiar landscape gave rise to this poem.

Star Watch A very different situational trigger for this piece. With the closure of an I.T. business I had worked for back in 1989, the head of the business gave each of his team a Caithness Glass Paperweight. We'd all seen the firm as being fairly leading edge and far-sighted and he had chosen a design by Colin Terris for us all entitled "Starwatch", with the legend "An orbiting space station carries out its lonely starwatch".

That's it! Less being inspired by a paperweight than perhaps it was the image it illustrating of what we had hoped to achieve.

All In the Present You must have been in the position of wanting to buy a gift for someone close to you but being completely bereft of ideas........... ring any bells?

Well, this was exactly the situation I found myself in a few years ago when seeking to buy a gift for my wife Linda. Rather than ask her what she'd like (you know how men hate to ask for directions) I decided to take inspiration from the coincidence of National Poetry Day and the event to be recognised. The result was that I and wrote and presented her with "All in the Present". I hope it gives you more inspiration than I had.

(By the way we did go out together and she did choose something that see liked and which has lasted).
